“All Stars” mode takes 11 songs from across the entire 10 year history of Just Dance (including one song from 2020, respectively), and combines them into a collection of greatest hits from all of the mainline titles in the franchise. Last but not least, however, is “All Stars” mode, exclusive to Just Dance 2020, and acting as a mini-campaign for the game. While both “Just Dance” and “Kids” modes have a good selection of recognizable songs, “JD Unlimited”’s library is far larger and contains more relevant songs, which makes it upsetting that said songs are locked behind a paywall. “JD Unlimited” mode is one that has been carried over across multiple entries in the series, and has a constantly evolving library of songs to choose from, though at the cost of a monthly subscription retailing for about $3.99 USD a pop. “Kids” mode is tailored purely for younger players, with easier song routines and more child-friendly songs to go alongside, making the game a nice pickup for families. “Just Dance” mode functions as the series’ bread and butter, with the traditional “pick-a-song-and-go” routine, allowing for fast-paced fun and 45 songs to choose from. Just Dance 2020’s gameplay is divided into 4 separate categories of play that can vary based on how you plan to use the game. Altogether, the control scheme and ease-of-play allow for a fun and engaging experience, especially across the multiple gamemodes on display. And while you can go at it alone, nothing’s better than dancing with friends, which is why Just Dance 2020 supports local play with up to 6 players. While there was an initial learning curve, the control method and gameplay work very well once you get the hang of them, and soon I had no issue hopping onto any song and dancing along with it. However, unlike platforms like the Wii or Switch, which use dedicated motion controllers to track the player’s movement, the game is controlled via the gyrometer in your phone, with the Just Dance controller app. As a dancer performs the action, you do it as well, with your total score graded on how accurate you were throughout the performance. As the song you picked plays, up to 4 choreographed dancers on-screen perform specific dance routines for each song, and your job is to mimic their movements. Many rhythm games in the genre rely on a typical controller or additional accessory like a microphone or dance pad, but in Just Dance’s case, YOU are the one in charge of the action. To this day, it continues to be a fun party starter, and Ubisoft has decided to take it one step further by introducing it onto a brand new medium, with the ability to keep the celebration going, anywhere you want and on any device. With its pick-up-and-play nature, vibrant gameplay, and a rapidly evolving library of songs, it’s hard to underestimate how far this franchise has come since its initial debut on the Wii back in 2009. Over multiple console generations and many new waves of music, the Just Dance series has had a strong impact on the rhythm game genre.
